Battersea Power Station - Through the Ages
You don’t have to go back far in the history books to discover Battersea Power Station supplied 20% of all London’s electricity. It was a 509 megawatt generator, the third largest in the UK.
An icon of industrial heritage that you’ll find on t-shirts, iPhone covers, postcards, the 2012 London Olympics pin badges, skateboards, and more. Bear Grylls abseiled down the building, Sir Elton John and Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden performed inside it and perhaps most famously, it’s on Pink Floyd’s Animals album cover.
Fast forward to today and you have a new thriving and creative neighbourhood, inspiring generations to come. art’otel is at the very heart of this redevelopment and the award-winning designs of the hotel interior pay homage to the incredible structure that has been looked at in wonder over the years. The spectacular JOIA Restaurant & Bar with its fluted pillars, and art deco inspired interior design was brought to life by the Russell Sage Studio who expertly and sensitively balanced the new and the old with contemporary designs in this destination restaurant and bar, the likes London has not seen before.
Look out for the Power Station in films such as The Dark Knight, The King’s Speech, the 1965 Beatles’ film Help!, Monty Python and even Superman III.
But like most vibrant leading characters, Battersea Power Station has a complex past. The world woke up to the concerns of pollution, air quality and our impact on the environment and in the 70’s the future of the Power Station was put into question when Station A was shout down and the rest to follow shortly after as cleaner sources of energy became essential to find.
Proposals to repurpose and remodel the space came and went. For many years none of them were able to achieve the right mix of retail and residential, or the right look and feel for a Grade II heritage building and one of the largest brick buildings in the world!
Take a look at the development today and you have one of the most forward thinking and advanced developments in the world.
